Types of earrings you should know about!

The practice of using earrings as fashion accessories has been around for many centuries now, dating back to before 2000 BC. Since that time, people have been experimenting with crafting and wearing earrings of different materials and styles.

There have been many attempts to categorize earrings in different parts of the world. Below are some of the most recognised types of earrings which you should definitely know about-

1) Studs

Studs are the easiest types of earrings to recognise. To put it simply, they are attached to the earlobe and no part of the earring hangs below or goes outside the earlobe in general. Studs are generally used in a more sophisticated or minimalistic setting

2) Danglers

Here is where things get tricky. Danglers are usually made up of two parts. A part which affixes itself to the earlobe and another part which dangles down significantly. A surefire identifier of such type of earrings is that when someone walks, the dangle part of the earring moves with them giving them a more playful kind of vibe

3) Drops

Drop earrings are somewhere in between studs and danglers. While part of the earring does drop below the earlobe, the more noticeable part of the earring is attached to the earlobe. For example, in the dangler earrings shown above, the more eye-catching part of the earring is dangling down and will move when we walk. While in the example of drop earrings below, the more eye-catching part is attached to the earlobe

4) Jhumkas

Jhumka earrings are more of an Indian thing. However, these types of earrings are now getting recognition around the world. They are similar to danglers. The main difference between jhumkas and danglers lies in the design. Jhumkas have an exclusively bell like structure which, like danglers, moves freely below the earlobe. They were traditionally worn in bridal outfits in weddings but are now used as a modern traditional accessory in everyday outfits as well

5) Hoops

Hoop earrings, like the name suggests, have round hoops in them. Typically, the hoop forms around the earlobe and drops a little. They are very commonly seen as office jewellery and everyday wear as well.

6) Cluster earrings

Cluster earrings have a collection of stones or jewels closely grouped next to the ear together. Different from the minimalistic design of most studs, clusters give a different, rich, look to the ear which is chicer than most types of earrings

This is what we mean. This can be thought of as a combination of both studs and cluster earrings

7) Tassel earrings

Tassels are similar to drop earrings but with a strong distinction. The part of the earring that drops below the earlobe are generally in the form of long threads. The long threads can either attach back up to the ear bone as in the example below or can simply hang as such. They give more of a party vibe

This is more of a twist on the traditional tassel earrings because the tassel attaches back up to the ear bone and these are meant for just one ear instead of both as tassel earrings are generally sold

Now that you are more familiar with the different types of earrings available in the market today, you can make a much more informed decision and match your dresses/clothes with the correct type of earring or vibe that you are going for.
